A gripping debut novel from Cardiff writer Richard C Morgan is set to hit bookshelves this May – and it’s already being compared to the work of John Grisham and Lee Child.
Revenge From the Inside, which will be published on 28 May, follows the desperate journey of a man imprisoned for a murder he didn’t commit. From a prison cell in the UK to high-rise boardrooms in Manhattan, this tightly plotted thriller is packed with betrayal, tension and family drama – and it’s all been crafted right here in the Welsh capital.
Morgan, who lives in Llandaff, says his passion for storytelling has long been shaped by Cardiff’s own creative energy. “There’s something about this city – the culture, the people, the history – that feeds your imagination,” he says. “I’ve walked the Taff Trail working through plot twists, and many scenes were drafted in coffee shops not far from home. It’s very much a Cardiff book, even though the story takes readers far beyond it.”
The novel centres on Patrick Reade, a man sentenced to eighteen years in prison for the brutal murder of his wife. When their young son is adopted by wealthy family friends and taken to New York, Patrick begins to suspect a much deeper conspiracy. As the years pass, a clue resurfaces – one that could change everything. With release on the horizon, Patrick begins a race against time to expose the truth, reconnect with his son, and finally clear his name.
Morgan was inspired to write the book after experiencing a vivid dream more than a decade ago – an idea that refused to fade. What began as a scribbled note became a manuscript, and now, his first published novel.
With its international scope and emotional depth, Revenge From the Inside is a thriller with brains and heart – but its roots are firmly planted in Cardiff. “This city gave me the rhythm to keep going,” Morgan adds. “I’d love to see the book championed locally – by the people and places that inspired it.”
