And in Cardiff, markets aren’t just places to shop – they’re where the city breathes. From historic arcades filled with traders who’ve been here for generations, to shipping containers turned street food hotspots, Cardiff’s market scene is as diverse as the people who wander through it.
I’ve been exploring Cardiff’s markets for over four decades – dipping in for fresh produce, losing hours in antique centres, and more often than not, leaving with something I hadn’t planned to buy. This guide pulls together the very best of them – not just where to go, but why they’re worth your time.
HISTORIC & ICONIC MARKETS
Cardiff Market
Sometimes called Cardiff Central Market
Cardiff Market has been at the heart of the city since the 1700s, and stepping inside still feels like stepping into Cardiff’s living history.
This is somewhere I come back to time and time again. The butcher and fishmonger alone make it worth the trip, but it’s the mix that makes it special. Cardiff Bakestones is a regular stop for me – you could argue they serve some of the best Welsh cakes in Cardiff (try the taste test). Head upstairs and you’ll find Kelly’s Records, if you love music, it’s one of those places you can happily lose half an hour without even noticing.

Don’t assume it’s open every day – Cardiff Market is closed on Sundays.
FARMERS & LOCAL PRODUCE MARKETS
Riverside, Roath & Rhiwbina Markets
These are proper community markets. Think fresh bread, local cheeses, small-batch produce and street food that feels a step above your average grab-and-go. Riverside, in particular, has one of the best atmospheres in the city on a Sunday morning.

Go early – the best fresh and baked goods don’t hang around for long.
Pontcanna Market
Set within Kings Road Yard, Pontcanna Market blends artisan food with some of Cardiff’s best-known independent producers. It’s relaxed, stylish, and very much in keeping with the area itself.
STREET FOOD & CREATIVE MARKETS
The Bone Yard & Bridge Studios
Shipping containers filled with independent traders, street food, plants and crafts – these are places that evolve constantly. No two visits feel quite the same.
Indie Superstore Markets
These markets pop up across the city, bringing together a mix of food, crafts and independent brands. You’ll often find something genuinely different here.
VINTAGE, ANTIQUES & HIDDEN GEMS
Jacob’s Antique Centre
There’s something dangerously addictive about this place. You don’t go in with a plan – you go in for a quick look and come out wondering how you’ve ended up with a retro piece you didn’t know you needed. A must visit.
Cardiff Indoor Flea Market
Tucked away in Splott, it’s not somewhere you stumble across – but it’s absolutely worth seeking out. There’s a proper sense of community here, helped by genuinely welcoming traders and a café that feels like part of the experience rather than an afterthought. I visit at least once a month.
The Pumping Station
Eclectic doesn’t quite cover it. You can easily lose an hour here, and the café downstairs delivers exactly what you want – a proper bacon or sausage sandwich and a good, honest cup of tea. Again, one of my Cardiff favourites.

A Few Cardiff Market Realities
Cardiff’s market scene is one of its greatest strengths – but it doesn’t always play by predictable rules.
Always check before you travel. Opening times can vary, sometimes at short notice. Even if the market itself is open, individual traders may not be. If you’ve got your eye on a particular stall, it’s worth checking their social pages beforehand.
Plan your route. Some of Cardiff’s best markets are spread across the city, and you won’t always be able to walk between them.
Make a day of it. Take your time, grab a coffee, chat to traders and enjoy it properly.
For the central ones, use Park and Ride. You’ll save on parking and make the day far more relaxed.
