Cardiff Council has launched a new parent and carer webinar to further strengthen the city’s wider Period Dignity programme. With the aim of encouraging open discussions about periods so that all children understand that they are a normal part of life, the webinar can help families feel informed, confident and supported when talking to young people about periods.

Developed by the Cardiff Health and Wellbeing Promoting Schools team in partnership with Brook, the pre-recorded webinar, ‘Supporting Your Child with Periods’, provides a clear and accessible introduction to menstruation, period products and the help available locally. It also explains how Cardiff’s Period Dignity programme works, including where free period products can be accessed across the city.

Available in both English and Welsh, the webinar supports the Council’s long-term commitment to tackling period poverty, reducing stigma and promoting dignity for learners and families. It complements the extensive provision already in place in schools and communities, where a wide range of free, sustainable period products are available.

By focusing on parents and carers, the webinar helps extend conversations about period dignity beyond schools, encouraging open discussion at home and ensuring young people are supported wherever they are.

The initiative sits alongside Cardiff’s significant investment in period dignity since 2019, including free products in all secondary and primary schools, community distribution through libraries and hubs, and targeted support for vulnerable groups and has contributed to Cardiff’s recognition as the UK’s first UNICEF Child Friendly City.

Cardiff’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Education, Cllr Sarah Merry said: “Periods are a normal part of everyday life and supporting families to talk openly about periods at home, is a vital part of our wider Period Dignity programme. This webinar gives parents and carers the knowledge and confidence to support their children, while reinforcing our commitment to ensuring no one in Cardiff is left without access to free, dignified period products.”

The Supporting your child with periods webinar is available online in English and Welsh.
