Ysgol Gymraeg Treganna in Canton has received a positive report from Estyn with inspectors highlighting the school’s “caring and inclusive community”, its strong leadership and its commitment to providing pupils with rich, engaging learning experiences rooted in Welsh identity and culture.
The report praises the clear strategic vision of Tri Treganna, which shapes the school’s ethos and contributes significantly to pupils’ happiness, safety and wellbeing. Estyn found that pupils benefit from a warm, supportive environment where they develop confidence, resilience and positive attitudes to learning.
One of the school’s standout strengths is its provision for wellbeing. Inspectors commended the Cwtsh and Nyth provisions for their sensitive, daily support for pupils, as well as the school’s “five purposes of wellbeing” model, which provides valuable assistance for both pupils and families.
Key findings from the report include:

Robust teaching, with most pupils making good progress in literacy, numeracy, digital and creative skills.
High‑quality Welsh language provision, fostering pride and confidence in pupils’ use of Welsh across contexts.
Strong identification and support for additional learning needs (ALN), enabling pupils to make good progress.
An engaging curriculum rooted in the local community, Welsh identity and understanding of the wider world.
Effective governance, with governors acting promptly to support improvements and champion pupil progress.
The school was featured in two spotlight case studies and was recognised for its highly effective and notable practice in supporting learners’ wellbeing, as well as in developing staff professional learning through research-informed and innovative pedagogical approaches.
Headteacher Catrin Evans said: “I am extremely proud of our Estyn report, which truly reflects the hard work, dedication, and collaboration of our entire school community. This achievement is the result of the collective efforts of our staff, parents, governors, and pupils working together to support every learner.”
Inspectors made just one recommendation: to ensure that the most effective teaching practices are applied consistently throughout the school. The school will now develop an action plan to build on its strengths and continue improving.
